The expansive romhack Final Fantasy 4 Ultima created by 8-bit fan has received a visual overhaul. FF4Ultima inspired me to learn how to adjust art assets in Super Nintendo games, so I’m beyond thrilled to offer this version, which features a lot of custom changes to the characters and a deeper classification system for items and spells.
New images of the characters in battle were sourced from assets in FF: Record Keeper, a mobile game from the 201Xs. Some of them were recolored, some were heavily edited. I used usenti and ff6tools to edit and import the images; I used windhex to alter many items’ and spells’ names to feature more or different icons.
Items that gained Icons:
- 🕒 ExitDoor, Hermes, SilkWeb, etc (Time spell items)
- ⚫ GaiaDrum, M-Cannon, etc (non-elemental damage items)
- ⚪ ElfCloak, E-Mantle, etc (protectives)
- ⚡ZeusRage, LitBolt, etc
- 🔥 FireBomb, BombCore, etc
- ❄️ ArcticWind, etc
- 🪶 AeroMote, etc
- 🔃 VampFang, Bloodfeast (same as the “HP Drain” seen on weapons)
- 🪦 Whisker (Instant Death)
- 🍾 Bacchus (same as Potions)
Spell Icons changes:
- 🕒 (Clock) for Haste, Slow, Float, Exit, Gravity, etc … all “Time” spells in other FF games
- ⚫ (BlackOrb) for Chocobo, Burst, Scourge, Bahamut, etc (non-elemental damage)
- 🔥Fire3, ⚡Ramuh, ❄️Leviatan, etc … matched icons for all elemental damage spells
- ⚪ (WhiteOrb) for Shell, Life, Sylph, Asura, etc… all the healing & protection spells
- ☀️ (Sun) designates Holy elemental spells and weapons/armor
- 🌘 (Waning Moon) indicates Dark elemental spells and weapons/armor
