The 1998 fan translation of “Final Fantasy V” is an epic achievement, done without modern editors. It has 3 typos that can be easily fixed, using a nice GUI like the noisecross TextEditor. Here is a patch to do that, and explanations of what is changed.
It’s optional to visit the vault of the 12 sealed weapons with Galuf in the party. If the player waits until later to do it, his replacement Cara (aka Krile) will say the line instead, but it will still be credited to Galuf.
An easy fix is to just use quotes for the line, so that it work for either speaker.
Galuf: These are...[EOL] The 12 Legendary Sealed [EOL] Weapons![EOL] So they really did exist.
Becomes:
"These are...[EOL] The 12 Legendary Sealed [EOL] Weapons![EOL] So they really did exist.
Note that the [EOL] is an invisible character that creates a new line. It’s like \\n in many notations.
Using an opening “ without a second closing quotation mark for an unnamed speaker who’s on the screen is already done in this translation, so there is precedent for this way of writing the dialog (it’s in the opening scene, before the main character is named).
A scene when Lenna is not in the party features her speaking two lines. This can be fixed to resemble the 2006 script of the game, which gives the first line to the main character, too.
Before:
Lenna: Returning the world to its [EOL] original form…
After:
And a supporting character is who speaks the second line, in the 2006 official translation.
So giving him that line instead seems like the best solution.
