Lots of options exist to change the player characters in the SNES version of Final Fantasy 4. These patches ought to work with all romhacks of the game, to include the ultimate and best, FF4 Ultima.

They will work with FF4 vanilla and other FF4 romhacks to include FF4 Ultima.

Please see the very bottom of the map sprites section for a special Ultima compatibility patch for the PURPLE map sprites.

Any Golbez patches here will ONLY work with FF4 Ultima!

Overview

Most of these were done by me, while some were designed by Nicoc1991. Sometimes changes to the sprites were also made, beyond altering the color values.

Most characters have variants that match the colors of their menu portraits; in some of the patches, Palom and Porom gained distinctive color schemes so they don’t look so similar anymore. (They both also have new map sprites and new menu portraits designed to match their new colors, vs their confusing green/orange twin outfits).

All of these are individual patches, for maximum customizability and thousands of mix-and-match combinations!

Map Sprites with alt colors & styles (25)

These map sprites are a good match for some of the battle sprites available below, so pair them together if you want. They’re sourced from both the original game’s and the Pixel Remaster’s sprites, which are both the same size; the PR sprites were reduced in color depth to fit the SNES palettes.

The patches that have PURPLE in their name change the colors for other characters, too, so watch for that— they are intended to be used together, for best results.
